THE STORY OF KRISHNA JANMASHTAMI - BIRTH OF THE DIVINE
A CELEBRATION OF THE DIVINE BIRTHKrishna Janmashtami is one of the most joyous and spiritually uplifting festivals in India, celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm by millions worldwide. It marks the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who descended to Earth to protect righteousness (dharma), destroy evil, and guide humanity towards truth and compassion.
THE LEGEND OF KRISHNA'S BIRTHThousands of years ago, the kingdom of Mathura was ruled by the tyrant King Kamsa. Though feared by all, Kamsa’s greatest fear came from a prophecy — that his own sister Devaki’s eighth child would be the cause of his downfall. Overcome with paranoia, Kamsa imprisoned Devaki and her husband, Vasudeva, and cruelly killed their first seven children.
When the time came for the eighth child to be born, the prison was mysteriously filled with divine light. At the stroke of midnight, Lord Krishna appeared — not as an ordinary child, but in his celestial form, adorned with a peacock feather crown and holding a divine conch and discus. He instructed Vasudeva to carry him across the Yamuna River to the safety of Gokul.
Despite heavy rains and the raging river, Vasudeva was protected by the serpent deity Sheshnag, who shielded baby Krishna until they reached Gokul, where he was lovingly raised by Nanda and Yashoda.
THE SIGNIFICANCE OF JANMASHTAMI
Krishna’s birth symbolizes the victory of good over evil and the promise that divine help will arrive when righteousness is in danger. His life’s teachings, found in the Bhagavad Gita, continue to inspire generations with messages of selflessness, love, and devotion.
HOW JANMASHTAMI IS CELEBRATED
Fasting & Prayer: Devotees observe fasts until midnight, the exact time of Krishna’s birth.
Bhajans & Kirtans: Temples echo with devotional songs and chants of “Hare Krishna”.
Dahi Handi: In some regions, young men form human pyramids to break a pot of curd hung high, recreating Krishna’s playful nature.
Decorations: Homes and temples are adorned with flowers, lights, and colorful rangolis.
A FESTIVAL OF JOY & DEVOTIONJanmashtami is not just about remembering the birth of Lord Krishna, but about embracing the values he stood for — love, truth, and compassion. As the midnight bells ring, devotees feel a deep spiritual connection, celebrating the divine presence that continues to guide and protect.
