Varalakshmi Vratham, also known as Varalakshmi Puja, is a revered Hindu observance honoring Goddess Varalakshmi, an incarnation of Lakshmi celebrated as the bestower of boons (Vara = boon, Lakshmi = wealth).
WHEN IS IT CELEBRATED?
Observed3on the second Friday of Shravana (July–August), or the Friday before Purnima (Full Moon)
For 2025, the festival falls on Friday, August 8
WHO OBSERVES IT & WHY?
Traditionally observed by married Hindu women (Sumangalis), especially in South India (Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana)
The vrat is performed to seek blessings for family prosperity, health (especially for husband), longevity, offspring, and removal of debts—believed to be equivalent to worshipping Ashta Lakshmi, the eight divine forms of the goddess
RITUALS & CEREMONIES
Preparation: Homes are cleaned, rangoli drawn, and a Kalasham (decorated pot) is prepared using rice or water, betel leaves, coins, turmeric, mango leaves, and topped with a coconut wrapped in a sari or adorned with a face of Lakshmi
CELEBRATE WITH FAITH & FERVOURPUJA STEPS:
Morning bath and traditional attire
Sankalpam (vow) followed by decoration of Kalasham
Chanting Lakshmi Ashtottara Shatanamavali (108 names) or Sri Suktam
Offering Naivedyam (sweet pongal, coconut, bananas, etc.)
Aarti with lamp/camphor
Tying of yellow thread (Dorak) to participants’ right wrists
Woman receive Vayana (food offering) and charity distributed next day.
