KNOW MORE ABOUT HOLI - FESTIVAL OF THE COLOURS

The history and significance of Holi

Holi, also known as the Festival of Colors, is a popular Hindu festival that is celebrated in India and other parts of the world. It is a vibrant and joyous celebration that marks the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Holi is usually celebrated in late February or early March, on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Phalguna.

The history and significance of Holi can be traced back to ancient Hindu mythology. According to one legend, the festival commemorates the victory of the Hindu god Vishnu over a demon named Holika. Holika was the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, who had received a boon from the god Brahma that made him virtually indestructible. Hiranyakashipu demanded that everyone worship him instead of the gods, but his own son, Prahlad, remained devoted to Vishnu. Enraged, Hiranyakashipu ordered his sister Holika to kill Prahlad by taking him into a fire. However, Holika was burned to death in the fire, while Prahlad emerged unscathed. Holi is thus seen as a celebration of the victory of good over evil, light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance.

The main attraction of Holi is the throwing of colored powder and water, which has become an iconic and worldwide symbol of the festival. People of all ages and backgrounds gather together to dance, sing, and splash each other with vibrant colors. The atmosphere is one of pure joy and celebration, as people forget their differences and come together in unity and harmony. Traditional sweets and snacks are also exchanged, and people visit their friends and family to celebrate the festival together.

In recent years, Holi has become increasingly popular around the world, with many non-Hindu communities also joining in the festivities. It has become a symbol of diversity, inclusivity, and joy, and is celebrated with great enthusiasm and excitement in many countries.

It is a time for people to come together in unity, forget their differences, and celebrate the joys of life. Whether you are a Hindu or not, Holi is a festival that is sure to bring a smile to your face and fill your heart with happiness. Celebrate the Holi with Kugan’s & get £10 shopping voucher
