INGREDIENTS:
FOR THE BANANA BLOSSOM (VAZHAIPOO:
Banana Blossom – 1 medium (cleaned and finely chopped)
Turmeric Powder – ¼ tsp
Salt – to taste
FOR THE CURRY:
Coconut Oil – 2 tbsp
Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp
Urad Dal – 1 tsp
Dry Red Chilies – 2
Curry Leaves – 1 sprig
Onion – 1 medium, finely chopped
Green Chilies – 2, slit
Garlic – 4 cloves, minced
Grated Coconut – ½ cup
Cumin Seeds – 1 tsp
Red Chili Powder – 1 tsp
Coriander Powder – 1 tsp
Turmeric – ¼ tsp
Salt – to Taste
HEALTHY HOME-COOKED COMFORTINSTRUCTIONS:
1. Clean the Banana Blossom
Peel off purple outer layers and remove florets.
For each floret, remove the hard stick (pistil) and plastic-like cover (calyx).
Chop finely and soak in water with turmeric to prevent darkening.
2. Cook the Blossom
Boil chopped banana blossom in water with turmeric and salt until soft (about 10–15 mins). Drain and set aside.
3. Prepare the Coconut Paste (Optional but adds richness)
Grind grated coconut with cumin seeds and little water into a coarse paste.
4. Make the Curry
Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
Add urad dal, red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds.
Add chopped onion, green chilies, and garlic. Sauté until golden.
Add the cooked banana blossom, salt, turmeric, chili powder, and coriander powder.
Mix well and cook for 5–7 minutes.
Add the ground coconut paste. Stir and simmer for 2–3 minutes.
